Culture24 and the Strategic Content Alliance are pleased to present:
"Everything you wanted to know about Wikipedia but were too afraid to ask".
Target audience:
This event is for anyone working in what
Wikimedia call the GLAM sector - galleries, libraries, archives and
museums. It is ideally suited to curators, members of the web team,
educational staff, marketing/press staff or those in strategic
management who are interested in exploring ways of improving the quality
of cultural and educational information in Wikipedia.
About the day:
Liam Wyatt is Vice President of Wikimedia Australia and a historian. He has recently been appointed as the first "volunteer Wikipedian in residence" at the British Museum - the first residency of its kind anywhere in the world. His principle task there will be to build a relationship between the Museum and the Wikipedian community through a range of activities, both internally and public-facing.
At this presentation, Liam will be drawing on his experience in bringing the museum and Wikipedia communities together to present a museum-sector-specific overview on the opportunities, benefits and challenges of working with Wikimedia. After his presentation, and along with other Wikipedians attending, there will be the opportunity for in-depth discussions and Q&A.
Attendees can expect to learn:
- The fundamental structures, policies and procedures of Wikipedia: what it does and how.
- The relationship of the professional cultural sector to Wikipedia: how they differ and how they Common pitfalls of working with Wikipedia and dispelling of myths
- Suggestions for projects that can be run in your own organisation: what works, what are the benefits and how to go about it.
